Pärnu-born but world-renowned piano teacher Arbo Valdma graduated from the Tallinn Conservatoire in 1966 under professor Bruno Lukk before going on to further studies at the Moscow Conservatory. Over the years he has won prizes and awards at a number of competitions.
In 1992 he was invited to take up the post of professor at Cologne Music School in Germany, where he teaches piano to this day. He also continues to give courses around the world. Arbo Valdma is also the honorary chairman of the jury on the Liszt Memorial competition for pianists, which has been held in Hong Kong since 2011.
Valdma launched his master classes in Pärnu in summer 2002, while his first winter piano school opened its doors in February 2006. As such, Professor Valdma has held master classes in Pärnu a great many times 18 in total. He gives courses in Pärnu so as to promote piano playing in his home town. In early 2009 he was recognized by Pärnu City Council with a medal of honour for his contribution to the educational and cultural life of the city.
More than 300 pianists have studied under Arbo Valdma, many of whom have gone on to be laureates in world-renowned competitions and teachers at universities in Europe, Asia and America. He has given solo concerts and performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles on three continents.
